Interview by Aarón García Peña with Kaira Pérez Aguada
2nd Book Fair of Vallecas
April 28, 2018

Aarón: Kaira, how does it feel to be at the Second Book Fair held in Vallecas? As well as with this warm welcome…

Kaira: I’m very happy that so many people have come to see me.

Aarón: I see that you’ve already published five books, Julia the raindrop” … they are all short stories for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old, aren’t they?

Kaira: Yes, I have three for younger children which are shorter, and two longer ones for older children.

Aarón The first one is “Julia the Raindrop”, the second one is “Two Amazing Cats”, the third one is called “A Day Without Oxygen, the fourth one is called “Diary of a Cat” and the last one is “The Other Dimension”. So tell me, being 12 years old, where does all this imagination come from which allows you to write so much and in this interesting way which people like so much?

Kaira: It suddenly happens that I feel inspired and since I am looking for ideas, I get inspiration from videos and things like that, and in the end the titles and everything else just come to me.

Aarón: If you had to tell your readers what they would find in each of these five books … how would you summarize it?

Kaira: Well … magic and emotion, because each book tells a different story and they are totally different and always have a happy ending, hahaha.

Aarón: How … If you had to introduce your characters, for example to your friends and your characters suddenly came alive  and you had to say, well they are like this, they are this way, how would you describe them?

Kaira: Er…as very happy, but they are involved in problems that have to be resolved in order to face …

Aarón: Los conflictos narrativos de siempre ¿no?

Aarón: The usual plot conflicts, right?

Kaira: Yes, and “Julia the Raindrop”, for example, is a book for the youngest children, and it’s about a raindrop that goes flying away on a windy day, passes over a lot of countries until she reaches her house, her home, and what I want to convey with my books, is that we should not lose hope.

Aarón: Are you  aware of the fact that you are a guide, not only for many adults but also for your generation? Not just because of your creative and inspiring capacity, your imagination which is extremely beautiful, but also because you are demonstrating that it is possible to have… Check out what I am going to tell you… free thought, the critical ability to create, to invent … being only twelve years old you are a wonderful guide with five published books, and as well, most of them have also been translated into English…

Kaira: All of them have been translated into English, and well, I’m very happy that you like them.

Aarón: If you had to say in some way…. I was inspired to love literature by one writer or another, to get hooked on the love and pleasure one feels when creating, to what names, for example, to which writers would you be referring to?

Kaira: I have never been inspired by any one writer in particular, but I always try to stand out because each one of us is different, and for me, something different is what most attracts the attention.

Aarón: ¿Y lo diferente eres tú misma no? ¿En todos los casos?

Aarón: And this something different is you yourself, isn’t it? Every time?

Kaira: Yes and … the other day I was saying at the English academy that I was trying to be different to stand out from the crowd.

Aarón: So that somehow you show yourself as who you are, without feeling ashamed or fearful, and other children can also benefit from that example, to be themselves.

Kaira: Yes, most people copy other people, because that’s how they feel safe and they do their best to not try out new things, but I think it’s important to be yourself, and not to copy the things that others do.

Aarón: Kaira, you are signing your books, your five books, “Two Amazing Cats”, “One day Without Oxygen”, or the one about the raindrop that comes home,  “Diary of a Cat” and “The Other Dimension”, in booth number 9, which corresponds to the Yayo bookstore … It is an honor, an immense pleasure to have you at this Second Book Fair in Vallecas and we deeply appreciate your presence and of course we invite you to come back again next year, or whenever, with Yayo. Please keep writing.

Kaira: Muchas  gracias.

Kaira: Thank you very much.
